Week 3 Collaborative Game Summary! (Week 24)

Concept Art Development:

Continuing on from last week, I worked on seeing how good I could make my vehicle drawings look, I showed my designs off to crit and got some useful feedback and area where to look at to make the overall design better.  Like last week I spent the majority of this week drawing and working on the vehicle designs, I finished some rough layouts to send to Georgia to make them in 3D,

I added the neon lights to the car, as I had never drawn neon lights on a car before, I was unsure of how to do it, so I quickly painted green under and on the bottom of the car, while this works, it is easier to add a drop shadow and make it light and fluffy for the next piece.

Crit Session:

I needed to look at how neon lights work with cars better, instead of painting use the underglow effect in the layers effect options.  I was recommended music that might work well with the game.  The mad max desert yellow colour for my hoverbike reminds people too much of the droid hoverbikes in Star Wars (S.T.A.P's) and to change it to a more metal like colour that would work better for the overall design.

Following my example I made last week, I drew out asset sheets for all my cars, I did these a lot quicker than the last one, I mainly needed to get the body shape and where the colours were, as well as where the lights would hit and shadow be shown. I intend to add some information and extra bits at the end to tidy it up, make it look more like an asset sheet.

Using the asset sheet I made for the hover bike, I began to go into the piece in more detail, I started late on the night before crit, so when I took it in to show I only had the first image to show in terms of progress.  After getting other peoples opinions on the drawing, I changed the colour, from a desert yellow type colour to a greyer colour to give the vehicle more of a metal look to it.  Next up came the process of finding where shadow and lighting would go, of course taking into account the reflection from the neon lighting.  This piece I was able to get done a lot faster, and thanks to the dirt and scratches it looks better as well.  Areas I could improve on would be making the edges and lines along the vehicle more sharper, (use more harder brushes) and make the windscreen look more like a windscreen, looking at the previous pieces that seems to be my biggest struggle, I will see if I can find a tutorial and look at how other artists draw windscreens to get a better understanding.

Strengths & Weaknesses:

This weeks strengths I found where that I was able to do my artwork much faster and better this time around, this due to a musical album one of the students recommended that was very fast and upbeat, this in turn gave me more energy to focus and push through.

This weeks weaknesses was that once again barely any of our group showed up.  If this is going to continue after the holidays, I will need to consult my team and tutors about the situation. Also I will look into how people draw neon lighting around objects to show better results in my artwork, for now I intend to focus on my essay proposal over the holidays.
