Joint Course Collaborative Project, Week 21 Summary!

Transforming the Mundane

I am in a team comprising students from Games Art & Design, Graphic Design and Design for Publishing. As a team we've been given a mundane object and tasked with finding a way to transform, and re-purpose the object that the group leader has chosen randomly.
I need to consider that I'm working with creative people to face an unfamiliar problem as a creative challenge.  Things I will naturally bring through this collaborative process is my creative instincts, skills, knowledge and - potentially - specialisms to bear on the project.

We will present our outcome in a three minute presentation containing images of our object. It is essential that this presentation is visually engaging and creative. It can be supported by additional physical elements (such as the object itself) and demonstrations. All members of the group/team must take part in the final presentation. The presentation may take the form of a digital presentation and/or a performance (lets put on a play). The presentation format is entirely up to us as a group, (it will probably be slideshow pdf); it should be derived from the ‘story’ that we are trying to tell. I must submit supporting material that documents your working efforts. All individual team members must document and evidence their contribution to the project (in other words this blog). I must also complete and submit a group/peer evaluation form.

Team and Ideas

My team consisted of:
Nick Thomas (Me): Games Art & Desgin
Jessica Raptorus: Games Art & Design
Rytis Juknevicius: Games Art & Design
Drew Mason: Graphic Design
Katie Jane: Graphic Design
Georgia Robinson: Design & Publishing

Tutor Meeting

Our object was duct tape and our emotion was loathing, after we found our group, we left to come up with ideas to talk to the tutors the next day about, we talked to the tutor about our ideas, I pitched my idea of it being a mascot for loathsome objects and people, we then shared ideas, one of the more popular ones was a hero idea, the tutor then went on the ask us questions about what the tape meant to us and do any of the ideas have some kind of flow, how can we transform it?

Mind Map ideas, things to consider:
The narrative: Does it have a story, if so what is it?
The audience: Who are we aiming this for?
It's history: What's it's characteristics? Is it good for something? What's bad about it? Does it have a meaning behind it?
Is there a specific message: Is it clear? Does it entertain the audience? Is it engaging?

Sketches and mind map for my tape idea.

Finally we settled on the idea of the tape being using by a superhero to tape up loathsome people, which we then narrowed down as a way to combat bullying. Afterwards deciding to portray our idea as a comic book series, we then decided on making it so that each issue of bullying will be a page long story, the issue's we chose where:
1. Race
2. Gender
3. Weight

Next was the roles which where required to make the comic and who would get what:

My Work

I was in charge of creating the comic for our group, after deciding how many pages we where doing I got to work on making them, I had four pages to work on, each one focusing on a different threat of bullying, expect for the first page which was an intro.

Page 1: Intro

Page 2: Racism

Page 3: Gender

Page 4: Weight

Initial sketches for comic pages

Rytis's Work:

Rytis did all the concept work for the comic, I used those designs he gave me to draw the characters in the story.

Jessica's Work:

Jessica attempted to make a model out of duct tape, but ran out of time, she was also helping out with parts that people where struggling with like the cover.

Katie's Work:

Katie was in charge of doing the front and back cover's as well as the text, which was put in the comic series to make it look like a real book.

Georgia's Work:

Georgia's work was to collect the research and assign everyone's roles for the presentation, I was in charge of narrating my comics story (wonder how that'll go :3)

Drew's Work:

Drew was given the role of creating the presentation that will be shown at the beginning of next week, he made it in indesign and turned it into a pdf for presentation.
Here are the slides for it:

Presentation:

I think it went well, considering my performance got a lot of laughs and overall was a good little project to work on over a week, however I feel that the games jam we did in week 10 was more fun.
